Groundwater Recharge Estimation in Upper Gelana Watershed, South-Western Main Ethiopian Rift Valley

چکیده
Estimating the spatial and temporal patterns of groundwater recharge through integrated water balance modeling plays an important role in sustainable resource management. Such effort is particularly essential for data-scarce regions, such as Rift Valley Lake basin Basement Complex Ethiopia, which has shallow aquifers, a proliferation wells, poor monitoring networks. A spatially distributed model (WetSpass), along with GIS remote sensing tools, was used estimation its suitability efficiency hydrogeological regions. The WetSpass depicted very good performance simulating Upper Gelana watershed within basin. analysis revealed that about 7% mean annual rainfall converted to recharge, remaining amounts are partitioned into surface runoff (19%) evapotranspiration (75%). simulation outputs also investigate relative influences biophysical driving factors on components. While land use types had greater influence actual processes, soil texture classes were dominant processes watershed. rates found be higher than 400 mm/yr central parts (Fisehagenent, Tore, Gedeb) lower 165 southern (Hageremariam) areal proportions low, medium, high recharging are, respectively, estimated 15%, 68%, 17% area. Fluoride exposure from groundwater as reflected by urinary fluoride and children's dental fluorosis in the Main Ethiopian Rift Valley.
This cross-sectional study explores the relationships between children's F(-) exposure from drinking groundwater and urinary F(-) concentrations, combined with dental fluorosis (DF) in the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER) Valley. We examined the DF prevalence and severity among 491 children (10 to 15 years old) who are life-long residents of 33 rural communities in which groundwater concentrations of ...
متن کاملCharacterization of Water Level Variability of the Main Ethiopian Rift Valley Lakes
In this paper, the water level fluctuations of eight Ethiopian Rift Valley lakes were analyzed for their hydrological stability in terms of water level dynamics and their controlling factors. Long-term water balances and morphological nature of the lakes were used as bases for the analyses. Pettit’s homogeneity test and Mann–Kendall trend analysis were applied to test temporal variations of the...
متن کاملGrowing lake with growing problems: integrated hydrogeological investigation on Lake Beseka, Ethiopia
The complex tectonic and volcanic processes in the Ethiopian rift valley have resulted in the formation of volcano-tectonic structural depressions that became sites for many rift valley lakes. Lake Beseka is one of the rift valley lakes in the northern section of the MER near to the Afar triangle. The lake plays an important role in the ecology of birds and wildlife, as it is located in the nor...
متن کاملGroundwater quality and its health impact: An assessment of dental fluorosis in rural inhabitants of the Main Ethiopian Rift.
This study aims to assess the link between fluoride content in groundwater and its impact on dental health in rural communities of the Ethiopian Rift. A total of 148 water samples were collected from two drainage basins within the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER). In the Ziway-Shala basin in particular, wells had high fluoride levels (mean: 9.4±10.5mg/L; range: 1.1 to 68 mg/L), with 48 of 50 exceeding...

BACKGROUND Cancer of esophagus is the 9 th It is aggressive with poor prognosis especially in its late stage. Cancer of esophagus is geographically unevenly distributed with high incidence found within sharply demarcated geographic confines. Earlier reports from this country indicated relatively high proportion of cases in residents of Western and Central provinces with low incidence in the res...
